It’s Not About Likemindedness, It’s About Paving a New Road

What am I talking about? The Bioethics Council for The President of the Untied States.

It seems President Obama is “rebranding” (via destruction and subsequent rebuilding) this advisory board by making it just about entirely conformed of his followers.

At first, my thoughts were: Oh, yeah, he really wants diversity…and then something more insidious came to me.

We’re in the midst of a serious discussion, one that involves the future of the Nation, based on the way we shall go with the future of medical care.

Along the way, there have been many comments on how the systems of Canada and Britain, under one path we may take, have had to ration medical care, and also how many people have, while they awaited a determination on allowed treatment, become so ill, that they passed away, or were then refused care, now that their medical condition had deteriorated to such a point that treatment wasn’t “cost effective.”

A competent (professionally), well varied (professional background and experience) in life’s serious issues, even if they didn’t politically align with The President, would serve us well.

A like minded group, who no doubt will be interviewed regarding their views on rationing, cost benefit analysis of the value of human life, and their political persuasion, shall be seated.

The President shall then have a seemingly legitimate set of voices, pre- and post-pended with those letters awarded from long academic efforts, who will, quite willingly, produce the proper ethical support for The President.

When we have a president that believes CO2 is a dangerous thing, and that AGW is a real condition to be feared, at what point will a group, asked to consider the ethics of biology, begin to rationalize some things that will not sit well with those who, prior to the MasterCard commercials, found something “priceless,” and it was called “life.” President Obama set himself squarely on the side of the “pro-choice” part of the citizens, trying in earnest to make sure late term abortions were acceptable. Add to that his election campaign comment about his girls getting pregnant being a punishment. This all speaks of a less than special feeling about humans, if they become the focus of a bad feelings, and therefore a burden.

How long before a massive Federal deficit, with no more taxes that can be raised, will need to set criteria for how much a system is burdened? Will the Bioethics Council be called upon to ponder the question of dwindling resources, and the burdensome crush of “sick people.” Will those determinations then become the foundation for a president to convince the voters that significant rationing, in order to ease the stress on the finances “of the people, for the people?”

At another level, it’s like handing out TARP funds and then demanding banks have bureaucrats determine compensation and lending policy, the same as forcing provisions for bounses for AIG employees, then conjuring rage against those who took the funds, per Federal Law, and then taking over GM. And a final circumstance that says President Obama is laying a foundation for his world of advisors to be nothing but echo chambers of flesh, is the ABC News “broadcast” from the White House, with ABC carefully selecting those in the room, so as to not have any hint of a contrary opinion.

President Obama does not want to hear, let alone listen to, any voice that does not mimic his. It is clear, and in the case of the Bioethics Council, it is worthy of considering the situational ethics that will come our way, not really from those charged with carefully considering the implications when it comes to matters of life and death literally), regardless of what a president may want to hear, but because, it’s the ethical thing to do.

Maybe I should avoid the rush and nickname to reconstructed organization as “The Parrots.” The problem is, many organizations will be able to be know by this title. I’ll have to work on this naming convention.

Satire and frivolity aside, President Obama is looking forward to positioning those who agree with him in key positions, so that his positions will be justified, and in this case, much to the detriment of humanity.

The future is not looking bright, as The President puts another brick in place to pave a road to where he wants to take not only us, but the rest of the world. After all, these are the people who will provide their views on abortion, cloning, euthanasia and what ever brand of eugenics that may come up.

Think carefully about how this is important that sober minded people, the best in the field, are placed on this board, and not a bunch of “Yes” people for the President. Consider the close linkage to the major discussion of nationalized health care.

President Obama is basically saying the Presidents since Gerald Ford have been doing it wrong. ANy organization can be used to debate a point of view, or to merely rubber stamp it. If it’s put together for the former, I suspect it will have lively discussions, but come to more honest and proper decisions. If for the latter, as in this case, it will be there to provide cover for a political decision, then backed up by “experts in the field.”

This President is making ethical decisions daily and more significant and wider ranging ones will need to be made when it comes to who receives medical treatment and who does not. Can we trust a man who who will throw someone under the bus to gain a greater political opportunity? What about how he can justify demonizing the pay checks of (right now) “The Rich” (which he is rapidly becoming), and turn the public outrage towards people and groups who oppose him from his bully pulpit?

Much of this comes to me as a significant issue from a college course in ethics, where we discussed how a nation ended up sending 6 million some people to their deaths, because of their lineage. It all began with accepting that the elderly were a burden on that society, then the mentally incompetent, then imperfect babies….each step further was supported by the same thought process of the last one.

We indeed live in interesting times. There is a reason for checks and balances in the exercise of the powers of the Federal (or any level of) government. Be on watch, and use yours, before we are too far down a path we find out we knew we should have never gone down.
