Test #1: Fail – Iranian Ship Sails On

by editor | January 28th, 2009

The US Military had to let a shipload of arms, bound for Gaza to head out on it’s way. Here is my visual metaphor for the situation:

From the source AP article:

Mullen said he long has favored approaches to Iran that would be a strategic benefit to the United States. Stability in Afghanistan is in both nations’ interest, he said.

“To the degree that we are able to dialogue with them, find some mutual interests, there is potential there for moving ahead together.”

He offered a heavy dose of caution.

“Iran is unhelpful in many, many ways in many, many areas, and so I wouldn’t be overly optimistic at this point,” Mullen told reporters at the Foreign Press Center.

This quote makes me think we are believing we can forge a WWII like alliance, like the one we had with the Soviet Union to destroy the Nazis. Only in this case, it’s like trying to ally with the Germans to destroy Germany. Somehow wanting the leading Nation of exporting Islamic Terrorism to help us eradicate Islamic terrorists shows an amazing level of naivete, or willful ignorance.

No longer are the Mullahs waiting to see the effect of change: They know, and it’s in their favor.

Update 1/28/2009: Max Boot agrees. The quoted article points out the UN has embargoed arms shipped from Iran. That alone, should have been justification to confiscate the contraband, but you know, the UN votes many resolutions, then sits around and lets the US take the heat for doing what is called for.

Update 1/28/2009: It seems the Egyptians have taken umbrage with the intended use of the weapons aboard the Iranian ship and have denied it passage through the Suez Canal. Good job, Egypt, for delaying this delivery, and possibly stopping it.
